Effects of scale and form of verandas on thermal protection performance
Veranda serves as a shading and heat protection area for homes in hot and humid regions, connecting indoor and outdoor spaces. However, there is limited literature on precise veranda design for climate regulation. This research focuses on the impact of veranda scale and form on thermal protection, aiming to establish design guidelines for a better indoor and veranda thermal environment. Local residential buildings on Hainan Island are analyzed to study veranda types and layouts. Simulation models, based on local meteorological data and Autodesk CFD software, are used to compare and evaluate different veranda scales and forms. Increasing the overhang from 1.5 m to 3.0 m can improve the thermal comfort of the veranda on first floor by 9.3 %. The number of verandas increased from one side to four sides, reducing the APMV values of the first and second level verandas by 0.26 and 0.1, respectively. The study proposes effective design guidelines for verandas in residential buildings, beneficial for sustainable development in hot and humid areas.
