Sobre a falta de adjacência em construções auxiliares no português brasileiro
This paper addresses verb movement in Brazilian Portuguese (BP) under a cartographic approach and proposes an analysis of the analytic construction in the language. Based on the different positions of adverbs, we argue that the auxiliary verb and its non-finite verb end up in different positions after the derivation is completed, creating a slot between the two. We bring out evidence for the existence of this slot by presenting independent studies that include the possibility of intervening clitics, emphatic subjects, negation, which point to the non-existence of a complex predicate structure encompassing auxiliaries and main verbs in BP. The paper highlights the consequences of the loss of verb movement and the advanced state of analyticization in BP and contributes to the ongoing discussion on these topics in Romance languages.
