Research on the Application of AI Technology in German Writing Teaching: A Study Based on SVM

When globalization takes place, mastering German writing is important for students to have both good command of the language and cross-cultural communicative competence. It is vital to express one's ideas in a foreign language in good taste while having good communication with other cultures when there are more and more exchanges among countries. However, the essence of German writing courses is the grammar and lexicon, without proper consideration to the culture of the language being learned, which will tend to produce some awkwardness and even impoliteness in writing. The appropriate integration of cultural features has been called to be an effective solution to stimulate students’ creativity, linguistic expression ability and cultural competence of language learning. Being in a certain specific cultural context helps students better grasp and apply the language, thus making the students better in presenting their thought and ideas in an artistic way. Although there have been some literature discussing theoretical advantages of taking into account the culture while teaching language, there hasn't been much evidence through quantitative experimental research to illustrate exactly the impacts of cultural infusion in language learning on writing performance. This paper uses the Support Vector Machine (SVM) machine learning method to analyze the efficacy of infusion of cultural element in the teaching of German writing. A teaching experiment is carried out to test German major students in Xi'an Mingde Institute of Technology, with writing materials and survey information collected from the subjects. Then we utilize the SVM algorithm to detect the influence of the infusion of culture on content richness, language expression, and culture comprehension, and further obtain the grades of German writing performance. It is found out that the infusion of culture into the teaching of German writing greatly fosters the quality of students’ writing and the understanding of cross-cultural communication. In this study, some effective evidence is provided to support the development of infusion of culture in language teaching and some principles of improving the teaching of German writing are revealed.
