Millimeter Wave Dielectric Resonator Antenna for 5G Communications with U-shaped ground cavity
A cylindrical, circularly polarized dielectric resonator antenna (DRA) operating in the millimeter-wave (mmWave) band is proposed for advanced 5G communication systems. The antenna resonates in the V-band at 40.4 GHz, making it suitable for mmWave backhaul applications. It achieves a simulated peak gain of approximately 5 dBi and exhibits an impedance bandwidth of 3.8 GHz (from 38.2 GHz to 42 GHz) for |S<inf xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">11</inf>| < −10 dB. The axial ratio bandwidth (ARBW) for circular polarization is measured to be 1.2 GHz (39.5–40.7 GHz), ensuring stable polarization performance. The inclusion of a U-shaped cavity-backed ground structure enhances mode confinement within the dielectric resonator and effectively suppresses surface currents, resulting in improved impedance matching and reduced back radiation.
