Optimized Wideband Antenna Array with Metasurface for Next Generation 5G Networks

This paper describes the design, development, and performance evaluation of a metasurface antenna (MSA) for 5G communication optimized MSA. The suggested antenna combines a microstrip patch array with an 8×4 metasurface (MS) to achieve high gain and efficient millimeter-wave (mmWave) radiation. The microstrip patch array on the Rogers RT Duroid 5880 substrate operates at 26.3 GHz and achieves a realised gain of 5.1 dBi. The MS incorporation increases the gain value dramatically to 9.6 dBi, showing the effectiveness of the structure in capturing and radiating energy. Systems that use modern wireless communication technology are especially suited to an antenna with a compact size of 1.04 λ<inf xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">0</inf> × 0.6 λ<inf xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">0</inf> × 0.3 λ<inf xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">0</inf>. Additionally, the MSA has a maximum efficiency of 74%. Therefore, the antenna is appealing for the 5G networks that need small-sized and high-gain antennas. These results demonstrate the importance of arrays of antennas with inclusions for meeting the challenging tasks imposed on the next generation of wireless systems, which will need high data rates, low latency, and wide area coverage.
