A comparative analysis of High Power Converter Topologies for LED Lamps
LED lamps have significantly progressed in replacing halogen, incandescent, and fluorescent lights for general illumination, including street lights. Despite its high energy efficiency and low power consumption, there are challenges yet to be addressed in the converter design to address its unique characteristics. Many prominent topologies have been optimized or redesigned for LED lighting applications. This paper compares three different converter topologies for LED lamps in terms of their power factor and harmonics. The design of the three integrated converters allows the LED lamps to power directly from the AC supply mains. Comparative analysis shows that the integrated double buck-boost converter (IDBBC) offers a great power factor with reduced Total Harmonic Distortion (THD).This paper presents only the single stage, single switch AC/DC converters. The integrated double buck-boost converter with a power-factor correction (PFC) cell to ensure a better power factor and low THD. The three circuits are simulated in MATLAB with a 230V input supply. The Output values are aligned with the designer's specifications. A hardware prototype is developed for an integrated circuit of double buck boost converter to power LED lamps of 70 watts.
