Video Games Sales Prediction Using CatBoost and GridSearchCV in Machine Learning
Yes, the video game industry indeed has experienced a phenomenal and enormous growth in size and scope during the last few years. It was very exciting and fascinating to see such growth right in front of our eyes. Consequently, because of such colossal growth, predicting sales figures has now become the most crucial and critical task in this growing industry. In the context of this particular project, our primary focus is on the task of providing an accurate video game sales figure prediction. To achieve this, we make use of the powerful CatBoost algorithm in combination with GridSearchCV, which are highly prominent tools in the ever-changing world of machine learning. We start the process off by collecting a robust dataset, which includes multiple video games. This dataset contains an array of features, including the gaming platform where each game is available, its genre, the name of the publishing company it was released by, and critic and user reviews, and not least, the year that each of the games was published. We do preprocessing of data by solving issues like missing values, encoding for categories, and then normalizing our numerical feature set. We break our data set into both a training set and a test set to feed this into CatBoost on data that trains the model. Indeed CatBoost is such an advanced version of gradient boosting algorithms specially designed with keeping categorical data at hand, yet it runs really well for several applications in real worlds. These models require hyperparameter tuning. We'll employ a particular class called GridSearchCV, which does an excellent exhaustive search over the particular set of parameters on a given grid. It will provide us with finding the appropriate set of hyperparameters that work especially good for the specific model presented in that setting and at this point we might not even have the optimal performance as a result, but we would be close enough to near optimality. The final step of our analytical steps is to comprehensively consider how well our model can perform. For this process, we're going to rely on several essential metrics with which we could measure that performance, of which some we will apply include using Mean Squared Error and that of R-squared values. These measurable metrics, though necessary, give us only a partial view of the whole. This is because other qualitative metrics, which involve the use of different visualization tools through multiple plots, will greatly help us find deeper insights into our model predictions. Additionally, these visualizations will allow us to compare our results with those delivered by other algorithms in an extremely effective manner. Hence, after due consideration and analysis, we can conclude this study by stating that the implementation of the CatBoost algorithm, along with the aid of GridSearchCV, has been undoubtedly successful in the accurate prediction of video game sales figures.
