Design of Heatsink Patch Antenna for S-Band Applications

Due to space constraints, using a separate heatsink to dissipate the heat generated by the components of a compact RF system is not feasible. This work presents the design of an S-band heatsink-integrated microstrip patch antenna (HIMPA) for compact RF systems. A microstrip patch antenna is modeled along with the fin structures to facilitate efficient heat dissipation in a space-constrained environment without affecting the radiation performance of the antenna. Simulated results demonstrate an S<inf xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">11</inf> of -32 dB at 3 GHz, with a bandwidth of 210 MHz. Moreover, an effective gain of 4.48 dB is obtained along with heat dissipation factor (Q) of 40 W. A parametric analysis is performed to obtain the optimum number of fins to be used in the design of HIMPA. Moreover, a comparative analysis with conventional patch antennas highlights significant thermal stability and operational reliability improvements. The proposed design ensures sustained antenna performance under high-temperature conditions, making it a viable solution for satellite communication systems.
