The Efficacy of Removal of LHS-1 Lunar Dust Simulant from NOMEX Utilizing Electrostatic and Mechanical Technologies
Lunar dust has long since posed problems for NASA by adhering to spacesuits and machinery, limiting their functionality. Exploring multiple dust removal mitigation techniques is imperative to the feasibility of long-term lunar habitation and exploration. This paper explores the efficacy of carbon nanotubes and copper wire electrostatic repulsion with ultrasonic vibration in removing LHS-1 lunar dust simulant from Nomex fabric. The methods range from 60%–96% removal efficacy by weight on a scaled model with recommendations for an industrial scale-up.
