Triple Band T-shaped Millimeter-wave MIMO Antenna for 5G Applications

A T-shaped planar quad-element MIMO antenna operating across three frequency bands is developed for 5G millimeter wave deployments. At first, a single-element T-shaped antenna is designed and analyzed on a Rogers RT/duroid 5008™ substrate, which has a relative permittivity (εr) of 2.3, a loss tangent (δ) of 0.0009, and a thickness of 1.57mm. This T-shaped element is then duplicated on all the side walls of the substrate, creating a four element MIMO antenna with four unique ports. The presented antenna operates at frequencies of 26.3GHz, 31.5GHz, and 35.6GHz, achieving gains of 12.39dBi, 12dBi, and 14dBi at ports 1 and 3. At ports 2 and 4, it functions at dual-band frequencies of 31GHz and 35.5GHz, with moderate gains of 12.5dBi and 15.5dBi. The following antenna exhibits an efficiency of 97% and demonstrates key MIMO key metrics, including an envelope correlation coefficient (ECC) of 0.005 and a diversity gain (DG) of 9.997 at 10dB. With its high gain and multi-band functionality, this antenna can be used for 5G applications.
