Battery Arbitrage to mitigate Brazilian Curtailment due to electrical reasons
The increasing integration of renewable energy sources, especially wind and solar, into the Brazilian electricity grid poses significant challenges, such as energy curtailment due to imbalances between generation and demand. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) in mitigating curtailment in a specific region of the Brazilian National Interconnected System (SIN). The analysis is conducted by evaluating different scenarios comprising the battery installation co-located to wind power plants and the hubs using a standard demand, and the curtailed generation data are calculated using the data provided by the National System Operator (ONS). Financial feasibility is assessed using indicators such as curtailment and payback. The results indicate that BESS can significantly reduce curtailment, increase grid flexibility, and support Brazil’s more reliable and efficient energy transition, but BESS use has no financial feasibility.
