Energy Performance Analysis Of Crystalline and Thin-film Solar Modules: A UK Case Study
This work is focused on investigating the performance of different types of modules under the same real-life conditions. Oftentimes, when module performances are evaluated, simulated isolated testing approaches are utilized. In this study, we have the unique opportunity to investigate different types of modules: monocrystalline, polycrystalline, bifacial, and thin-film modules under the same conditions over a year. Thus, the main aim is to compare their performances. We implement this analysis using energy mismatch and energy per area, and other metrics to emphasize the impact of deployed module technology and site design specifications. The observed impact of shading and module manufacturing variation was visible and indicated appreciable loss. This implies that avoiding significant financial loss from energy produced would require adequate maintenance activity or updates to the financial model employed. Furthermore, insights from this work highlight the need for advanced digitization, such as digital twins, to keep adequate records of various historical changes. This would enhance future analytics, as most were not captured by the existing commercial monitoring software.
