Exploring Complementarity Between Functional Safety and Cybersecurity in the Chemical Process Industry
In chemical process industries, functional safety (FS) is key for bringing risks down to an acceptable level. Trends in the used FS-hardware tends to link safety systems to control systems. As such safety loops become exposed to cyberthreats. However, different standards guide industry in dealing with functional safety -e.g. IEC 61511- resp. cybersecurity -e.g. IEC 62443. This might lead to conflicting requirements and overly complex solutions. This fast abstract explores how complementarities and conflicts between both standards might be dealt with, applied in the context of continuous chemical processes.
