Converter PWM Switch (CPS): A New PWM Switch Concept
Pulse-width modulation (PWM) is a foundational concept in modern power electronics, typically realized by the high-frequency switching of power semiconductor devices such as MOSFETs or IGBTs, with controlled duty cycles. This letter introduces a fundamentally new PWM switch concept: the Converter PWM Switch (CPS). Unlike traditional PWM switches, the CPS employs one port of a converter to perform the function of a PWM switch, while its additional ports serve to source or sink power, enabling a new class of converter topologies, referred to as CPS-based converters. In this letter, the definition and derivation of the proposed CPS are discussed in detail. To show the advantages of this concept, a CPS-based isolated boost converter is presented with high efficiency, wide voltage conversion range, and straightforward control, demonstrating the capability of the CPS and the superior performance of the new topologies it enables.
