Relationship of Socio-Family Support with Therapeutic Adherence of Patients with Arterial Hypertension in Primary and Specialized Care Medical Units

Introduction. High blood pressure is a chronic disease considered a epidemic due to its high prevalence and notable increase in mortality. Currently the availability of pharmacological alternatives to control the pathology is high and very effective. However, patients are unable to achieve optimal blood pressure levels due to low levels of therapeutic adherence. Objective. To evaluate the relationship between socio-family support and therapeutic adherence in patients with arterial hypertension who attend primary and specialized care consultations. Methodology. Observational, cross-sectional, analytical and comparative study. The MMAS-8 and MOS scales were used to determine therapeutic adherence and socio-family support respectively. Results. A higher prevalence of medium adherence was found in family medicine (52.4%) and a higher low adherence (59.4%) in specialties. Patients perceived they had a high level of support. The supports were analyzed; emotional, instrumental, positive social interaction and affective, chi-square (x2) was performed with therapeutic adherence and in specialties a statistically significant relationship was shown (p=0.038) between low values of adherence and emotional support. Conclusion. The less emotional support, the lower the adherence to treatment in patients with high blood pressure who attend the specialized medical unit.
