Treatment of proximal digital annular ligament desmitis in five horses
sacroiliac pain 57% (37/65), front feet pain 23% (15/65), impinging dorsal spinous processes 19% (12/65), gastric ulcers 17% (11/65) and caudal cervical joint osteoarthritis 10.8% (7/65).Treatment undertaken in juveniles was predominantly surgical: 84% bilateral subtarsal neurectomy and fasciotomy, 11% no treatment performed, and 5% received medication and extracorporeal shockwave therapy.Main limitations: Age at time of examination may not necessarily correlate with onset of clinical signs. Conclusions: PSD is commonly thought of as a repetitive strain injury in mature horses. However, we confirm that PSD can cause PP/lameness in young horses that might otherwise be thought to have developmental orthopaedic conditions due to no history of intense exercise.Concurrent disorders were frequently present and the hypothesis is supported.Ethical animal research: Not required: retrospective case series.
