Insights into creating animated videos for sustainability accounting courses using Powtoon
Purpose This study aims to reflect on the process of creating animated videos to help students engage with sustainability accounting knowledge. Design/methodology/approach Self-study qualitative research was used to reflect on experiences in creating animated videos within the context of blended sustainability accounting courses at a German university. Data were triangulated using course documents, educator records, animated videos and student feedback. Findings This study provides insights into the process and challenges of creating AVs using the Powtoon Web-based platform. Creating videos involves three stages comprising 11 steps: (1) pre-production (concept development, project planning, scriptwriting and storyboarding); (2) production (signing up/logging in to animation software, selecting templates, adding/customizing scenes and content, animating videos and adding voiceovers and music); (3) post-production (quality control, review and feedback, distribution preparation). The results reveal three educator challenges: storyline preparation (first stage), video editing (second stage) and time constraints (third stage). Practical implications This study provides a step-by-step guideline, coupled with illustrative examples and practical suggestions, to support other educators in applying this innovative approach in their courses. Originality/value The paper contributes to the literature on sustainability accounting education and educational technologies in higher education. It extends knowledge about producing lecture-created videos using animation technologies and broadens knowledge about educator challenges at various video production stages.
