Phytochemistry Investigation of the Hepatoprotective and Liver Regeneration Potential of the Leaf Extract of Struchium sparganophora

Phytochemistry and in-vivo potential leaf extract of Struchium sparganophora (SS) to treat liver damage was examined in this study using liver function biochemical assays. A total of sixty-seven (67) chemical components were identified in the extract using gas chromatography-mas spectrometry (GC-MS) 3α,4α-epoxymurolan-9(11)-en-10-ol identified as the main component (11.5%). The biochemical results showed that increased in GSH concentrations indicates its protective potency to cells from toxins and diseases. Significant superoxide dismutase (SOD) concentrations showed greater potential to remove reactive oxygen species (ROS). An increased concentration of catalyse (CAT) activities regulates cellular level of hydrogen peroxide, and hydrogen catabolism protection of the cells from oxidative assault. Increased levels of RBC attributed to the presence of phytochemicals responsible in reversing diclofenac induced anaemia. Lipid profile resulted in the raising of the HDL levels which enhances a normal and good heart functioning of the system. Reduction of alanine transaminase (ALT), aspartate transaminase (AST) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) enzymes in the extract is an indication of the hepato-protective potency of extract. This study showed that S. sparganophora (SS) have good prospects of being hepatoprotective drug candidate.
