Numerical Analysis of Crack Resistance in Superlength Circular RC Structures: A Case Study of a Stadium Building

ABSTRACT Superlong reinforced concrete structures are susceptible to cracking due to concrete shrinkage and fluctuations in ambient temperature during construction. To evaluate the crack resistance of a seamless circular grandstand of a stadium, a numerical simulation method was developed that considered different nonlinear factors. The concrete material properties were determined by tests, with the data incorporated into mathematical models and programmed into subroutines. Temperature loads were chosen based on local climate records. The “birth–death element” technique was used to realize segmented structure pouring based on construction steps. Finally, the concrete stress distribution across slabs on the superlength circular structure was calculated, revealing that the early‐poured concrete slabs experienced higher tensile stresses in the long‐term construction process. The parameter analysis showed that using fast‐shrinkage concrete could mitigate the tensile stress in slabs. Additionally, incorporating calcium oxide‐based expansion in the concrete of postpouring belts could effectively counteract structural shrinkage, but excessive expansion proved unnecessary. Closing the main structure on the lowest ambient temperature day significantly decreased the impact of temperature variations. Implementing a sequential placement method for the postpouring belts helped to alleviate the concrete stress in the slabs. The research results provide valuable references for the crack resistance of superlength circular concrete structures.
