Evaluation of the nutritional impact on the protein profile of the California red worm [Eisenia foetida]
In this study, four diets for worms of the species Eisenia foetida were analyzed to increase their protein content for potential human consumption in the form of worm meal. The diet provided to the worms directly influences their nutritional value. The worms were fed for 90 days with four different diets composed of combinations of bovine manure, vegetable residues, and animal residues. The results showed that worms fed with bovine manure, plant residues, and animal residues produced meal with the highest protein content [49.75%] compared to meal from worms fed only bovine manure [45.50%]. This diet also showed the highest population [104.6%] and total biomass [86 g] growth. The findings demonstrated that diversified diets improve protein yield and species multiplication, positioning Eisenia foetida as a sustainable source for human and animal nutrition.
