Enhancing the Skills in Inferential Statistics of Senior High Students through Diagnose, Oversee, Support, Test (DOST) Method

This study examined the effectiveness of DOST method in enhancing the skills of Senior High School Students under Computer System Servicing (CSS) strand in inferential statistics at Kapalong National High School. The researchers proposed an intervention plan named the DOST (Diagnose, Oversee, Support, Test) method. In this method, the researchers identified learning competencies related to inferential statistics from the Department of Education’s K-12 curriculum guide for Senior High School – Statistics and Probability. The researchers implemented DOST method intervention in the core subject, Statistics and Probability, which deals with inferential statistics. This intervention has four phases: diagnose, oversee, support, and test phase. Prior to the implementation of DOST method, there were five learning competencies identified as difficult based on the students’ pre-test scores, while after the intervention, the learning competencies identified as difficult went down to three. Moreover, results indicated that students achieved higher scores in the post-test compared to the pre-test, suggesting a notable difference between the two test results, t(31) =12.6, p<.001, with a standardized effect size of Cohen’s d=2.23. In the qualitative phase, the researchers gained insights about the positive outcome of the intervention together with the challenges faced by the students. In conclusion, the DOST method was effective in enhancing the skills in inferential statistics of the students. Although there were challenges experienced by the students during the conduct of the intervention, but it was outweighed by their positive experiences encountered along the way.
