Beyond serendipity: uncovering novel ratiometric urea·24DHBA cocrystals through mechanochemistry and MicroED

Mechanochemical synthesis of urea cocrystals with 2,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid (24DHBA) reveals two new stoichiometric forms: (urea)2·(24DHBA) and (urea)2·(24DHBA)2, not accessible <i>via</i> solution methods. The known (urea)0.5·(24DHBA) form remains the most stable. These findings provide critical insights into stoichiometric tuning of agro-cocrystals and pave the way for their practical application in sustainable agriculture.

Abstract

Mechanochemical synthesis of urea cocrystals with 2,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid (24DHBA) reveals two new stoichiometric forms: (urea)2·(24DHBA) and (urea)2·(24DHBA)2, not accessible <i>via</i> solution methods. The known (urea)0.5·(24DHBA) form remains the most stable. These findings provide critical insights into stoichiometric tuning of agro-cocrystals and pave the way for their practical application in sustainable agriculture.
