Rasas as Targeted Molecules Meet Cancer Drug Discovery: Exploring the Anticancer Potential of Himalayan Medicinal Plants Through RasaBased Ayurvedic Pharmacology

Introduction: The Drug development and Discovery for a specific disease from Ayurveda depends upon the approach of its Pharmacological principles as explained in Ayurvedic theories. The application of the Ayurvedic pharmacological theory in the specific diseases such as Arbuda (Cancer) can be exemplified through modern scientific principles. Pharmacological parameter of Ayurveda such as Rasa can play a vital role for the development of drug for the cancer is due to similar structure with wide range of bioactive molecules and pharmacological behavior present in it. Rasa of the different Himalayan plants acts as a target molecules for the management of cancer. Material and Methods: The compilation and tabulation of Himalayan Dravyas and data sources were included through an systematic review of classical Ayurvedic texts and relevant scientific articles. Selection and categorization of the plants were primarily based on their geographical distribution in the Himalayan region. Results: The study explores the pharmacological properties of Rasa (taste). The study shows Tikta (bitter), Katu (pungent) and Kashaya (astringent) Rasas exhibit anticancer properties, while Madhura (sweet) Rasa accelerates cancer progression. By integrating Ayurvedic principles of organ development with modern cancer cell line research, this approach provides a novel framework for targeted drug discovery. Understanding Rasa as a molecular target offers a strategic advantage in developing specific cancer therapy. Rasa function not merely as sensory qualities but also as predictive markers of pharmacological activity. Conclusion: Tikta, Katu and Kashaya Rasas exhibit anticancer properties, while Madhura Rasa promote cancer progression. Recognizing Rasa as a target molecular and pharmacological marker can advance specific cancer drug development.
