Vulnerability Management Frameworks for Cloud-Native Applications: From Threat Modeling to Continuous Security Assessment

Cloud-native architectures create some unique security constraints that require advanced vulnerability management mechanisms that fall outside customary paradigms. This framework takes a comprehensive approach to security and discusses the importance of proactive security mechanisms encompassing both container and serverless environments, including examining specific threat modeling approaches tied to distributed systems such as Kubernetes and AWS Lambda deployments. The framework discusses the assessment of risk associated with third-party dependencies through metrics and automated scanning approaches, as well as establishing secure coding approaches for microservice architectures. Also, it demonstrates continuous security assessment mechanisms integrated within CI/CD pipelines to identify vulnerabilities in real-time using both static and dynamic testing methodologies. The proposed remediation strategies include automated patch management workflows, input validation paradigms, and infrastructure-as-code security protocols. The framework demonstrates the capacity for organizations to establish effective security mechanisms while maintaining a velocity of development through clearly identified, prioritized, and remediated vulnerabilities. Examples demonstrate successful deployments in a production environment and have proven useful in pen-test simulations, security alert triage systems. This framework provides tangible examples for security practitioners and developers wishing to create viable vulnerability management mechanisms in cloud-native environments.
