Case Study on Ayurvedic Management of Vitamin B12 Deficiency Anaemia With Reference To Pandu Roga
Introduction: Vitamin B12 deficiency anaemia occurs when the body lacks enough healthy red blood cells due to insufficient vitamin B12, often caused by poor diet, malabsorption, or conditions like pernicious anaemia. Common symptoms include fatigue, pallor, short of breath glossitis, tingling in the hands and feet or memory issues. In Ayurveda, this condition is comparable to PanduRoga, marked by pallor, exhaustion, and a lack of energy, attributed to Pitta imbalance, Mandagni, and deficient Rasa and RaktaDhatu. Given the similarities, it can be managed through Ayurvedic diet, herbs, and lifestyle interventions. Method: A 32-year-old male patient with clinical symptoms of B12 deficiency anaemia and laboratory-confirmed low B12 levels was treated for 12 weeks with an Ayurvedic regimen: AmalakiSwarasa (10 ml) twice daily before food, ChitrakadiVati (250 mg) BD before food, Shatavari granules (3 g) at night with milk, and a powdered combination of TapyadiLoha (250 mg), AbhrakBhasma (75 mg) and SuvarnaMakshikaBhasma (250 mg), taken twice daily before food, MunakkaSidhhaJal whole day, DhatryadiLoha(3g) at morning. Results: Following treatment, the patient showed marked clinical improvement with resolution of fatigue, glossitis, and tingling sensations. Haemoglobin increased from 9.1 g/dL to 12.8 g/dL, serum B12 rose from 138 pg/mL to 280pg/mL. Discussion: The positive outcomes suggest the effectiveness of Ayurvedic interventions in managing B12 deficiency anaemia through mechanisms such as improving digestion, enhancing nutrient absorption, and supporting haematopoiesis. The combined action of Rasayana, Agnideepana, and Raktavardhak therapies addressed both symptoms and underlying pathophysiology. Conclusion: Ayurvedic treatment offers a promising approach for managing Vitamin B12 deficiency anaemia, particularly in cases with chronic symptoms or malabsorption. This case highlights the need for larger clinical studies to validate its efficacy
