BBMRI-ERIC’s 10-Year Roadmap addressing European and global challenges towards One Health

Background/Objectives: BBMRI-ERIC is the European Research Infrastructure for biobanking and biomolecular resources, supporting health and life sciences research across 25 Member and Observer countries and IARC/WHO. With 26 National Nodes, 473 biobanks, and affiliated partners, BBMRI-ERIC provides a unique framework for enabling responsible access to high-quality biological samples, data, and biomolecular resources. As a distributed Research Infrastructure, it fosters collaboration, advances innovative methodologies, and enhances interoperability across countries.
Methods/Results: BBMRI-ERIC offers a comprehensive portfolio of services spanning Ethical, Legal, and Societal Issues (ELSI), Quality Management (QM), Information Technology (IT), Biobanking Development (BBD), Public Affairs (PA), Outreach, Education & Communication (OEC), and Finance and Project Management (FPM). Hereby, BBMRI-ERIC engages its community and partners in more than 23 active EU projects, including various projects for advancing cancer research, precision medicine, rare diseases and others. BBMRI’s federated access and analysis platform has become a strong asset and reference point for major EU initiatives (e.g., EHDS, 1+Mio, GDI, EUCAIM) ensuring GDPR-compliant access to biological and health data from over 7 million individuals across 32 countries. BBMRI has recently published its vision for the next decade, which emphasises a "One Health" approach that interconnects human, animal, and environmental health.
Conclusions: This presentation will introduce BBMRI-ERIC, the European research infrastructure for biobanking and biomolecular resources in health and life sciences. It will provide insights into how BBMRI-ERIC supports high-quality, ethically sound translational research across Europe - and beyond - and highlight its role in advancing the One Health approach, which recognises the interdependence of human, animal, and environmental health.
