Alopecia areata: A clinical review of the changing landscape with Janus kinase inhibitors
Alopecia areata (AA) is an inflammatory condition that results in non-scarring hair loss of the scalp.Patients with AA have a higher likelihood of experiencing comorbid conditions.Furthermore, patients with AA experience higher rates of anxiety and depression and have a reduced quality of life relative to healthy individuals. There are many therapeutic options for AA, but there is no agreed-upon efficacious treatment for the disease.Since June 2022, there have been 3 Janus kinase inhibitors approved for the treatment of severe AA, helping to address an unmet therapeutic need for these patients. This review describes the AA disease state and provides an overview of treatments available for AA.
