Study on the stability of emulsified paraffin with different preservatives

The mildew and odor of emulsified paraffin seriously limit its industrial applications. To solve this problem, this work investigated sodium diacetate, sodium benzoate, potassium sorbate, and butylparaben as preservatives on the stability of emulsified paraffin. The results found that the optimal emulsification temperature is 75 °C, the viscosity of the paraffin emulsion is 13.75 s, the solid content is 39.4%, the dispersion is first-class, and the centrifugal and standing stabilities are good. The four preservatives had no significant effect on the stability and dispersion of emulsified paraffin wax and had a limited effect on centrifugal stability. The emulsified paraffin with 1.5% sodium diacetate has good liquidity, and the solid content fluctuation is less than 1.5%. Sodium benzoate and potassium sorbate have a stronger ability to prevent mold than sodium diacetate and butylparaben. After adding 0.15% sodium diacetate, the Zeta potential was as high as −38.53 mV. The preservative sodium diacetate does not change the non-Newtonian fluid rheological properties of the emulsified paraffin, and the emulsion has good shear resistance. This study provides theoretical and technical support for the stable application of emulsified paraffin.
