The Use of 3D Laser Scanning Technology in Crime Scene Investigations
Obtaining accurate information is crucial for a forensic expert. In this regard, 3D technologies have proven essential for forensic science. Over recent years, these technologies have been actively introduced into investigations, significantly enhancing the scope of forensic research and providing a sufficient evidence base at various stages of the criminal investigation process. Three-dimensional scanning technologies are particularly suitable for documenting trace evidence and traffic accidents, as they enable high-resolution documentation in both enclosed spaces and outdoor environments, creating a more efficient workflow in a shorter timeframe. This has led to the emergence of a specific branch of forensic science: 3D Forensics (3DFS). This paper discusses the capabilities of the Trimble X7 3D laser scanner in investigating a firearms storage site after a fire and subsequent explosions, as well as a traffic accident between a car and a motorcyclist.
