Simulation of enhanced light output from YAG:Ce crystals using periodic grating structures

YAG:Ce single-crystal scintillators offer fast decay and high radiation tolerance but suffer from poor light extraction due to internal reflection. We propose periodic surface gratings—fabricated via an SiO 2 overlay or direct photolithography to enhance light output. Using FDTD simulations, optimal grating geometries were identified. Field distributions show strong electric-field modulation under polarized incidence. At 550 nm, the grating structures increase transmittance by up to 78% at θ =0 ∘ (dipole source) and 30% at θ =90 ∘ , compared to unstructured surfaces. These results demonstrate the effectiveness of photonic crystal-inspired gratings in improving light extraction efficiency, offering a promising strategy for YAG:Ce and other luminescent materials.
