OPTIMIZED SOLAR-POWERED MICROGRID DESIGN FOR SUSTAINABLE RURAL ELECTRIFICATION

The increasing demand for reliable and sustainable energy in rural communities has intensified the need for optimized renewable energy solutions.Traditional grid extension in remote areas is often economically unfeasible due to high infrastructural costs and geographical challenges.Consequently, solar-powered microgrids have emerged as a promising alternative for sustainable rural electrification. This study presents an optimized design and simulation of a solar-powered microgrid system aimed at providing reliable, affordable, and environmentally friendly electricity for rural communities. The methodology integrates photovoltaic (PV) generation, battery energy storage systems (BESS), and optional backup sources such as diesel generators to ensure power reliability under variable solar irradiance and load demand.Using advanced modeling and simulation in MATLAB/Python, the study evaluates the technical, economic, and environmental performance of different microgrid configurations.Optimization techniques, including load demand forecasting, resource assessment, and cost-benefit analysis, are applied to determine the most efficient mix of PV and storage capacity that minimizes levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) while ensuring system reliability. Results indicate that an optimized solar microgrid with adequate storage can supply up to 90-100% of rural electricity demand while significantly reducing dependence on fossil fuels and lowering greenhouse gas emissions.Furthermore, sensitivity analysis highlights the impact of variations in solar resource availability, battery capacity, and load fluctuations on overall system performance. The findings demonstrate that solar-powered microgrids can serve as a sustainable pathway for rural electrification, enhancing energy access, improving socio-economic development, and supporting global decarbonization goals. The optimized framework can guide policymakers, engineers, and rural electrification planners in designing cost-effective and sustainable energy solutions tailored to local conditions.
