The education of Muslim minority of Greece during the civil war 1947-49
In communism, the task of shaping the "new" man is shouldered by education. Socialist pedagogy must be multidimetional, combining theory with scientific training in order to put everything that young people learn into the service of society. Therefore, education is a state affair, offered free of charge without gender discrimination, while each ethnic group is taught its language without restrictions. During the Greek civil war (1947-1949), educational structures were organized in the areas controlled by the Communist Party, despite the special conditions that prevailed. This was also applied in mountainous Thrace in which Muslim’s were a minority. The Communists placed a great emphasis on educating Muslims, as they believed that controlling their education would bring significant benefits to their struggle. The issuance of a special alphabet for Muslim children was their most important initiative. Despite the fact that they invested politically and materially in the issue, their efforts came to an end in the summer of 1949.
