Indigenous Water World and Politics of Resurgence in Select Works of Rebecca Belmore

One of the many creation stories in Turtle Island is the fall of the Sky Woman and how the world was created when she landed on Turtle’s back. When the Sky Woman, who does not know the way of the water world, fell from the sky, she was helped by the sky animals and sea animals alike. According to Indigenous stories, the sea world and sky world were already here, and there was an order of things before the sky woman fell and transformation happened. It was sea animals who helped the sky woman create land using the dirt from the depths of the ocean. The Indigenous worldview and values are an organic continuity of this creation story. It teaches them to live in balance and maintain a peaceful relation with the environment they live in. There is a sense of responsibility and accountability towards the land and its resources, which are considered as loaned from the future generation.
