Bravanariz's Fluid Landscape
Abstract: This paper analyzes Catalan niche perfumery Bravanariz's practice of "capturing" key aspects of the Empordà landscape as scents, as well as their use of narrative, documentary, and a form of guided physical hiking/walking that echoes early excursionisme 's didactic mode in their product elaboration and marketing. I argue that while the house seeks to establish a new relationship between the modern subject and nature predicated on smell, the act of rendering a landscape liquid not only decouples it from its space, but in this case also raises compelling questions regarding the connection between olfaction and national identity.
