2018 Wave Radar-based Spectra Dataset at Socheongcho Ocean Research Station

This study evaluates the effectiveness of a filtering technique and the accuracy of wave parameters derived from wave spectral data collected by a remote sensing wave observing system at the Socheongcho Ocean Research Station in April 2018. The performance of the remote sensing system was evaluated by comparing wave parameters -such as wave height, period, and direction- derived from the spectrum with those obtained from the Directional Waverider buoy. The results showed that the raw spectra substantially overestimated wave parameters, particularly the wave period and direction. In contrast, applying an optimal filter reduced the root mean squared error of wave height to 0.19 m and led to moderate improvements in period and direction, although some reliability issues remained. In particular, in cases where the spectrum exhibited multiple dominant energy peaks, filtering alone proved insufficient to accurately estimate the wave period and direction. These findings highlight the need for correction techniques that account for spectral characteristics. The dataset constructed in this study provides a valuable foundation for further research on wave analysis and data quality improvement.
