Developing a word list and list of formulaic languages to create a corpus informed EFT module for raising awareness of green tourism

English for Tourism (EFT) is a specialized course aimed at equipping tourism professionals with the English language skills needed in their field. With the increasing global emphasis on sustainable or green tourism, EFT must also evolve to address this environmental concern. One effective way to integrate this theme is through the development of teaching materials that reflect the language used in real-world green tourism contexts. This study aims to develop a corpus-informed EFT module that raises students’ awareness of green tourism. Utilizing a corpus approach, the study generated a Green Tourism Word List as well as lists of formulaic language, such as collocations and lexical bundles, which can enhance the authenticity and relevance of learning materials. Tools such as AntConc, LancsBox, and AntWordProfiler were used to filter the data based on frequency, range, and lexical profiling. Collocations were identified using Mutual Information (MI) scores, while lexical bundles (3-grams and 4-grams) were extracted based on frequency and dispersion. The study identified 299 relevant words and multiple useful expressions that can be integrated into the EFT curriculum. These resources are expected to help learners better understand and communicate issues related to sustainable tourism, ultimately supporting more environmentally conscious tourism practices.
