Studying Metal Contamination in Anguilla Bengalensis in Chenab River

A study on accumulation of heavy metals in Fish and human health risk assessment in the consumption of contaminated tropical freshwater eel species (Anguilla bengalensis bengalensis) from the Trimmu Head work (Trimmu-Sidhnai Link Canal) , the Chenab River was carried out. Atomic Absorption Spectrum (AAS) analysis was used to evaluate and determine the amounts of Pb, Cd, and Hg in the specimens. In Anguilla bengalensis, the range of total values (µg/g wet weight) was 0.86-1.03 (Hg), 0.47-0.53 (Pb), and 0.05-0.12 (Cd). According to study results, certain species of freshwater eels collected dangerously high levels of Pb, Cd, and Hg. The Target Hazard Quotient (THQ) and Hazard Index (HI) showed that Mercury has highest concentration and cadmium has lowest concentration in all samples. The estimated daily intake of metals (edi) then calculated to analysed possible dietary exposure to heavy metals through diet. Total Health Quotient (THQ) was computed to evaluate possible health risks. Human population has highest THQ values for mercury , then from cadmium and least from lead. The gonads and gills of the fish was analysed to determine the extent of tissue degradation. The damage to the fish's gonads and gills was measured indicating many damages in overall tissues.
