Histomorphometric indices for follicular ovarian cysts in cows

It has been established that atresia in tertiary follicles occurs according to obliterative and cystic types. Cystic atresia was detected in 44.63 % of tertiary follicles, and obliteration – in 33.91 %. In addition, tertiary follicles of larger diameter (3761.17 ± 208.13 µm) were more often subjected to cystic atresia compared to obliterative one (1434.12 ± 79.32 µm). Atretic changes in the ovaries of cows with follicular cysts were found in 78.54 % of tertiary follicles, whereas in animals with full ovary cycles – in 64.43 %. With obliterative atresia, a dystrophic loosening of the theca’s granulosa was recorded, as well as a pronounced discomplexation and desquamation of cells covering the cumulus oophorus and egg, and densely fill the follicle cavity with the subsequent formation of a fibrous interstitial gland. With cystic atresia, slit-like formations appear between the theca and granulosa with the processes of loosening, thinning of the layers of the follicular epithelium and desquamation of follicular cells in small quantities into the cavity of the cystically transformed follicle.
