Assessing Indicator of Reduction in Soils films in Alabama Blackland Prairie soils for wetland restoration
Plain Language Summary Wetlands support biodiversity and water quality, but many are difficult to identify using typical indicators. This study evaluates Indicators of Reduction in Soils (IRIS) films as a tool to detect wetland soils under atypical conditions. IRIS films coated in iron (Fe) and manganese (Mn) oxide paint were installed in three different areas: a clear, saturated wetland area; a clearly dry upland area; and a transitional zone in between. Three testing rounds were conducted to evaluate paint removal caused by microorganisms in the soil. Mn‐coated films confirmed reducing conditions during the first round in all zones, while Fe‐coated films gave inconsistent results. Later rounds showed limited or partial activity. Soil samples showed textures and patterns commonly linked to saturated soil conditions. Overall, the study suggests that IRIS films demonstrate potential in improving research aimed at identifying wetland soil indicators in areas that are more difficult to assess.
