Numerical study on the performance of reinforced fill structure using marginal fill
Reinforced fill structures (RFS) play a vital role in geotechnical engineering applications which includes retaining walls, embankments, retaining landfill structures, & slope stabilization. The use of geosynthetics enhances the stability of soil, helps to distribute the loads evenly and reduces settlement. They also provide a better alternative in terms of cost, aesthetics, simplified construction and adaptability to different site conditions. The choice of a backfill material is a critical parameter in the design and construction of a RFS. Usually, granular material is considered to be a conventional backfill material because of various benefits i.e. having high strength & good drainage capability. But due to shortage of granular soil, it is necessary to study other alternatives. The use of marginal fill as an alternative has been pointed out as a sustainable and effective means of attenuating the environmental impacts and reducing natural resource depletion. This paper presents a numerical study within the finite element method framework. The findings demonstrate that marginal fill can provide a reliable, environmentally sustainable option for RFS.
