Influence of different paving geosynthetics on crack growth phases and strain behavior in asphalt overlays
This study aimed to assess the impact of different paving geosynthetics on crack propagation and the mitigation of reflective cracking in asphalt mixtures based on four-point bending tests combined with Digital Image Correlation (DIC). The study evaluated pre-notched beam configurations of double-layered asphalt slabs, both with and without paving geosynthetics. DIC analysis was used to measure strain patterns in the central area of the specimens during crack propagation. Results clearly showed that paving geosynthetics significantly delayed crack propagation, as reinforced beams endured more cycles than the control beam. Geosynthetic-reinforced asphalt samples achieved tensile strains reduction factors ranging from 0.07 to 0.36, indicating their superior effectiveness in mitigating strain concentrations and maintaining the neutral axis position for longer periods. Findings highlight the critical role of interface shear bond and reinforcement characteristics in prolonging pavement service life.
