Solving geometric problems by high school 10 grade students: a comparative research

The present study is a comparative study, which refers to the effectiveness of the use of dynamic geometry tools in relation to the use of traditional tools to solve geometric problems. Research has shown that the ability of a Secondary School student to solve a geometric problem is related to the functional understanding of the geometric shape required by the problem, and this understanding is improved by the use of appropriate tools, such as software. The study involved 16 students of Grade 10, who were classified into eight pairs and engaged in activities, which included geometric problems that required the construction of a geometric shape. In the activities half the students used the software and the rest used the traditional tools. According to the results of the research, the students who used the software solved the geometric problems more easily in contrast to the students who used the traditional tools.
