The vocational high school offers its graduates the opportunity to practice a profession with technical training. However, in our country, the low academic performance of vocational high school students appears to be a major issue, as it is a matter of serious concern for technical education teachers. Daily, vocational high school teachers encounter student indifference and a lack of interest in academic learning. According to educational psychology, factors contributing to students' low academic performance include school self-concept, self-esteem, and the lack of internal and external motivation. This study investigates the levels of school self-concept and self-esteem, combined with the internal and external motivations of vocational high school students in western Thessaloniki. The research findings associate school self-esteem and self-concept with students’ academic performance. Furthermore, the role of motivation in relation to vocational high school students’ academic learning is highlighted.
