Perception of parents and children, regarding children's rivalry within family

The aim of this study was to investigate the perception of parents and children regarding rivalry within the family. The present study involved 250 whole families with two children (250 parents and 250 children - one parent and one child from each family participated). The age of the parents ranged from 36 to 41 (M = 38 years) and the children were 10 years old. Regarding children, 57% was firstborn and 46% was boys. In terms of parental level of study, 36% of mothers and 33% of fathers had university education, while 64% of mothers and 67% of fathers were secondary school graduates. The fraternal questionnaire was used (SRQ, Furman and Buhrmester, 1985). According to the results of the research, it seems that children consider that there is more children"s rivalry, compared to the perception of their parents. This can have an impact on children"s behavior in school.
