Exploring the Role of Korean Medicine Doctors in Community Care: A Survey-Based Study of Perceptions among Korean Medicine Doctors and Healthcare Professionals

Objectives: This study aimed to explore perceptions of Korean Medicine Doctors' (KMDs) roles in interprofessional collaboration within community-based integrated care settings. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among KMDs and other healthcare professionals (HPs) with experience in community care. Participants were recruited through the Association of Korean Medicine Doctors and the Korean Association of Primary Health Care. The survey was conducted online for 14 days from November 19 to December 2, 2024, collecting responses from KMDs and HPs who had participated in community care. Descriptive statistics and comparative were used to assess perceptions and experiences. Results: A total of 440 responses were analyzed (KMDs: 389; HPs: 51). While both groups recognized the need for collaboration, KMDs reported lower awareness and experience with interprofessional collaboration. Most participants agreed that KMDs are suitable as both primary and collaborative care providers, though HPs more often favored the collaborative role. Legal and institutional frameworks were identified as key prerequisites for enhancing collaboration. Conclusions: Although there is growing recognition of the need for KMDs in interprofessional teams, structural and educational barriers remain. Establishing clear roles, pursuing institutional reform, and promoting interprofessional education are critical steps toward effective collaboration.
