The significance of training for the development of knowledge and skills and productivity increase
The recent economic crisis in Greece has highlighted the need for additional practices for the re-development of the country"s economy. Employee education and training, according to human capital theory, can have optimal results in enterprises of all sectors and, consequently, in a country"s economy. The present study investigates the sector of coffeehouse chains, due to its paradoxical rapid growth in the midst of an economic crisis. In particular, the main purpose of this quantitative research is to study the relationship between the training received by employees in this sector and their job satisfaction and productivity. The research sample consists of 175 employees in coffeehouse chains throughout the Greek region. The tools used for this research are Job Training and Job Satisfaction Survey, developed by Schmidt (2004) and Job Performance Scale, developed by Williams and Andersen (1991). The results of the research showed that the education of employees is positively and significantly related to both their job satisfaction and their productivity. In fact, the analysis showed that staff training is a predictive factor for productivity, while job satisfaction of the employees who participated in this research is a mediating factor between education and productivity. This research highlights the need for education in all professional fields. Further study of this issue could be carried out by investigating additional factors related to work, such as work engagement and organizational commitment.
