Pre-Installed Cable Protectors Improve Safety for Completions

Abstract Completions today will commonly use cross coupling cable protectors to support and protect cables and control lines being deployed as part of the completion. Installing these cable protectors typically requires multiple personnel working in the redzone for 1 or more minute at each tubing joint. Many operators seek new methods and procedures to reduce or eliminate personnel activity in the redzone. A new style of cable protector, that is pre-installed on tubing offline, has been developed to greatly reduce personnel activity in the redzone. This paper looks at the use of these pre-installed cable protectors (PICP) and quantifies the safety improvements they provide including a reduction in the number of personnel and the amount of time they are exposed to work in the redzone as well as speeding up run-in-hole (RIH) operations and saving rig time and costs.

Abstract

Many operators seek new methods and procedures to reduce or eliminate personnel activity in the redzone.
