Maximizing Gas Production Via Compressor Optimization with Integrated Asset Modelling in Maturing Fields

The need for compressor optimization becomes more critical when natural gas fields mature. As reservoirs age, natural pressure declines, resulting in reduced gas output. By monitoring and maximizing compressor performance, optimal pressure levels can be maintained, ensuring efficient gas extraction. This involves optimizing compressor speeds, improving maintenance schedules, and integrating advanced monitoring systems, but also exchanging compressor bundles more suitable for the changing operating conditions. These measures not only boost gas production rates but also extend the lifespan of the field, reduce operational costs, and enhance overall energy efficiency. In essence, compressor optimization is a key strategy for maximizing the yield and profitability of aging gas fields. This paper presents several case studies within the west asset in the Dutch sector of the North Sea, which has been operating with different compressor arrangements over more than twenty years and at the same time is facing compressor performance degradation over time. The challenge lies in extending the life of existing compressors while optimizing production. Within the case studies the benefits are shown while using an integrated asset modelling approach for compressor optimization. Via integrated asset modelling the optimum timing of compressor rebundling can be predicted to result in maximized gas production in maturing gas fields along with an increase in fuel gas efficiency.
