The Priority Paradox: When UNOS Bypass Code 850 Works Against Multi-Organ Recipients

Background: UNOS bypass code 850 is defined as ‘potential recipient bypassed because a multi-organ recipient was identified as having higher priority based on a different organ match run’. Given the complexity of multi-organ allocation and the potential for systemic inequities, we examined the impact of code 850 use on liver-intestine (LI) and multivisceral transplant (MVT) candidates.

Abstract

Background: UNOS bypass code 850 is defined as ‘potential recipient bypassed because a multi-organ recipient was identified as having higher priority based on a different organ match run’. Given the complexity of multi-organ allocation and the potential for systemic inequities, we examined the impact of code 850 use on liver-intestine (LI) and multivisceral transplant (MVT) candidates.
