Barriers to school participation in paediatric intestinal transplant recipients
ethnicity, type of intestinal failure (IF) -short bowel syndrome (SBS), dysmotility (motil), congenital mucosal disease (mucosal)-, intestinal failure-associated liver disease (IFALD), ITx variant (isolated [IITx], combined liver-intestine [LITx], or multi-visceral [MVTx]), grafted colon, donor age, donor/ recipient (D/R)weight ratio, time on waiting list, cold-ischemia-time (CIT), acute cellular rejection (any severity), nonspecific-ileitis, PTLD, GVHD, length of ITx hospital stay (LOS), graft loss, patient survival by age and by graft type (IITx vs Liver containing grafts -LiCOnt).Statistics were performed using IBM SPSS (Version 29.0.2).Results: From 12/2003 to 12/2024, 162 primary intestinal-containing-transplants were performed.Table 1 summarizes results according to group, gY=81 pts (50%) vs gO=81 pts.All received comparable immunosuppressive protocols and target blood levels. One, 5 and 10-years patient survival by group is shown in figure 1.Conclusions: Fifty percent of our series was composed of children younger than 2 years. Those primarily referred for IF due to SBS with advanced IFALD, required a higher proportion of LITx and MVTx.ACR was more frequent in gO and associated with significantly higher graft loss.Ten-year patient survivals were comparable and above 65%.Although challenging, young children achieve excellent results in experienced centers.
